For the homeless of Bucharest
SamusocialdinRomânia
cares for adult homeless people in Bucharest, who represent an extremely
heterogenous population: this population includes elderly people,
whose pensions are not enough to pay rent, families who have been
expelled from their housing, and former street children who prove
particularly difficult to care for. It also includes many people
suffering from psychological disorders, as the citys psychiatric
services are extremely insufficient.
Providing shelter
Multidisciplinary mobile assistance teams cruise the streets
of Bucharest three nights and two to three days a week to bring assistance
to socially excluded populations.
In order to provide shelter for those people who most require assistance,
samusocialdinRomânia, in
close partnership with the municipality of Bucharest, is opening a
night shelter.
In the daytime, people who need it are referred to the medical and
psychosocial office run by Samusocial. The plan, part of a
post-emergency measure, is to convert the office into a real drop-in
centre in early 2006.

Making the network professional
samusocialdinRomânia plays
a role in running and professionalising the network of key
players who deal with the homeless. As such, four community clinics
that serve the homeless receive supplies and medicine from samusocialdinRomânia.
Futhermore, samusocialdinRomânia
organises training sessions for various professionals who work with
the homeless.
Analysis - lobbying
The activities of samusocialdinRomânia
require that data be collected concerning the people it meets and/or
accommodates. The goal of this effort is to better evaluate the
issue of exclusion and to improve the services that are offered.
samusocialdinRomânia has
become a major player in dealing with the problem of homeless people
and providing them with care in Bucharest.
