Helping children and young women living
on the streets of CASABLANCA

No definite assessment exists concerning exactly how many children and young women are currently living on the streets of Casablanca. It would be all the more difficult to conduct such a study in that children and young women on the street are very mobile, in particular because of police raids and since new people are constantly finding themselves on the street.

These two population groups are very vulnerable to the dangers of the street; children lack survival skills and are highly exposed to epidemiological risks, assaults and sexual and/or commercial exploitation; young women suffer a high degree of violence (battery, rape, rackets, sequestration, etc.).

The samusocialCasablanca project, currently being developed, is based on several missions:

Guaranteeing a regular mobile assistance on the streets
In order to provide medical and social emergency aid that is adapted to children and young women on the street, a mobile assistance team will go to meet with these groups several times per week, both during the day and at night. It will be composed of a nurse executive, a social worker and a driver/social assistant.

Opening a daytime drop-in centre

Daytime services will be provided five days a week in the drop-in centre of samusocialCasablanca. The children and young women who are met by the mobile team will be able to visit the centre to benefit from medical consultations, nursing care, social help, talks with a psychologist, hygiene services, etc..

Building the capacities of partner structures
In order to optimise the assistance given to these children and young women, samusocialCasablanca will collaborate with a Moroccan partners’ network, which it will animate. In addition, it will provide medical support to those structures that need it and will organise coordination meetings with all partners.

Running analysis and advocacy activities
Thanks to the work carried out by teams, data will be collected concerning children and young women on the street. This information, gathered in a database, will make it possible to draft publications that will be distributed to inform and increase public awareness about the situation of these populations. These documents will also be used as tools for advocacy with institutional partners, so as to better take into account the children and young women on the street within the definition of social policies.
